Bertram G. Snow has traced his family's history from the time they left England in 1623 to their arrival in Rockland, Maine when they began their long history of building ships in the area. The family once owned Snow's Shipyard in Rockland that started building ships in 1854. They built minesweepers during WWII. A park in Rockland was named Snow Marine Park in honor of the family.

Maritime Heritage Minnesota was awarded a Minnesota Historical and Cultural Grant in April 2010 to devise a plan for the preservation of the wreck of the Sloop-of-War USS Essex. USS Essex was the last ship designed and constructed by North America's premier 19th Century shipwright Donald McKay and is the only known example of McKay's craftsmanship to exist in the world.
